Consider what you need to store
As in kitchen planning, it's essential to plan your bedroom storage to get the most of the space, so work out how much hanging space and drawer space you will need. Think about the height of the rail. A rail fitted at half the height of the wardrobe will have plenty of space for shelves above, however you won't be able to hang coats or full-length dressers.
Consider storage space for shoes, bags, luggage and spare bedding, and whether you need tall, thin shelves or deep, wide ones.
Fully fitted and walk in wardrobes
Fully fitted wardrobes offer the best storage options and can be designed to fit around awkward angles, sloping ceilings and uneven walls, making the most of any space. Even if the wardrobe is restricted to one wall, it will provide a generous amount of hanging and shelf space, however fitted wardrobes are a more expensive option than freestanding wardrobes and often need to be designed and fitted by an expert.
Consider fitting sliding and bi-folding doors to save on floor space and a combination of glass doors and interior lighting can create an interesting atmosphere.
If you are fortunate to have a large bedroom, or an L shaped space, consider building a partition wall and creating a walk-in wardrobe with open shelving and rails. This a luxurious and expensive option, but will ensure your bedroom is a calm and clutter-free retreat.
Freestanding wardrobes
Freestanding wardrobes offer the most versatility in terms of cost and design, and can be taken with you when you move house. Consider where you will be putting it, then measure the space, taking into consideration skirting boards and radiator pipes if you're fitting it into an alcove.
Consider wardrobes with drawers at the bottom or up the side for storing extra bedding or jumpers, and don't forget that you can utilise the top of the wardrobe with decorative storage boxes for a pretty display.
